Moscow, October 3, 2019 - Philip Morris International Inc. (PMI) congratulated the world's first smokeless island of Astypalea (Greece), which received the Smoke-Free Culture certificate. Local authorities have created a culture that inspires residents and visitors of the Greek island to build a future without smoke and ashes, abandoning cigarettes.
The island was awarded the Smoke-Free Culture certificate from the leading independent organization TUV Austria, which seeks to reduce the volume of tobacco smoke through the implementation and continuous improvement of a package of measures to promote smoking cessation. Adult smokers who do not give up their habit are encouraged to switch to less harmful alternative smokeless products.
TUV Austria developed an independent certification protocol in 2018. The organization checks the companies for compliance with the requirements of the protocol through an independent audit and awards them a certificate in the event of a successful audit. The audit provides an objective, comprehensive and fully documented assessment. This certification is available for various events, companies and corporations, as well as for geographical areas such as cities, towns and islands.
“We are proud to support this initiative and congratulate Astypalea on achieving its goal. We hope that other territories around the world will follow their example by joining the construction of a smokeless future. ”“Said Frederic de Wilde, Regional President of the PMI for the European Union.
The spread of smokeless culture among local residents and visitors of Astypalea was accompanied by the inclusion of its symbolism in the island's visual communications, as well as the placement of information on the island itself: at the airport, seaport, beaches and historical areas for adult smokers who would otherwise continue to smoke provides information on the best alternatives.
“The best that smokers can do is completely stop using tobacco and nicotine-containing products. However, many of them do not give up their habit, so they need to talk about less harmful alternatives, " - added Frederic de Wilde.
In the process of burning, a large amount of harmful substances is formed, which can provoke a number of diseases associated with smoking. Smokeless products do not exclude health risks and contain addictive nicotine, but significantly less harmful substances are released when used compared to cigarettes. Such products, when manufactured in accordance with appropriate quality and safety standards, represent a better alternative for adult smokers compared to continuing to smoke.
In its quest to build a smokeless future, the PMI introduced the Smoke-Free Destinations concept, a place where a culture free of smoke and ash was successfully implemented. As part of this concept, adult smokers who do not give up smoking cigarettes create special spaces in which you can get all the necessary information about smokeless nicotine-containing products, such as the IQOS heating system from the PMI.
Philip Morris International Inc. (PMI) is the first tobacco company to transform its business in order to create a future without cigarette smoke and, ultimately, replace cigarettes with smokeless products in the interests of adult consumers who would otherwise continue to smoke, companies, companies and their shareholders.
PMI is a leading international tobacco company engaged in the manufacture and sale of cigarettes, smokeless products and related electronic devices and accessories, as well as other nicotine-containing products in markets outside the United States. The PMI is building the future based on a new category of smokeless products, which, although not completely harmless, represent a much better alternative than continuing to smoke.
Due to the ability to use various fields of science in the development of products, the most modern production base and scientific justification, the PMI seeks to ensure that its smokeless products meet the preferences of adult consumers and strict regulatory requirements. According to the PMI, as of June 30, 2019, about 8 million adult smokers in the world have already quit smoking and switched to a tobacco heating system, which is sold under IQOS delusions in 48 markets in key cities or across the country.
